Professor Hakkı Polat Gülkan

From 1971 onwards Professor Polat Gülkan spent his academic career mainly at Middle East Technical University (METU), Department of Civil Engineering until his retirement due to the statutory requirement in 2011. He was then the department chair at a private university in Ankara. He served as dean of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Hacettepe in 1982-86, as a visiting researcher at the University of California, Berkeley and visiting professor at Purdue University, W. Lafayette. He worked as senior consultant at Basler & Hofmann Consulting in Zurich, Switzerland. In his final position at METU he served as the Director of the Earthquake Engineering Research Center. During 2011-16 he was the department chair at Çankaya University in Ankara, and during 2016-17 he moved to the Northern Cyprus campus of METU in Kalkanlı.
Professor Gülkan is an earthquake and structural engineer, and since 1971 he has been active in many areas of global earthquake risk mitigation. He served as President of the International Earthquake Engineering Association (IAEE) in the period 2010-2014. He served IAEE in various capacities between 1996-2016. He has been involved as consultant in the site safety investigations of nuclear power plants in Turkey as consultant to the Turkish Nuclear Energy Authority (TAEK).
From 2007 to 2013, Dr. Gülkan was the Editor of Earthquake Spectra, one of the leading professional journals in the field of earthquake engineering listed in SCI Core List. He is currently serving in the editorial boards of eight other international journals.
Professor Gülkan's professional work has been acknowledged by the NATO Science Prize (conferred in 2004) and by the TÜBITAK Science Award (conferred in 2007). He has also been accorded the title of Honorary Member by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) in 2012. Professor Gülkan was elected to become an IAEE Honorary Member at the 16th World Earthquake Engineering Conference held in Santiago, Chile, in January 2017.
His scientific work includes about one-hundred articles, a book section, encyclopedia articles and 350 conference papers and reports. He has five books of which he is the author or editor. As of May 2018, there were about 2600 citations of his work.
